Consumer Unit Upgrades & Fuse Box Replacement in Hartlepool

If your fuse box keeps tripping, you’ve been told it’s old, or you’re unsure whether it’s still safe, we can help.

We regularly carry out consumer unit upgrades and fuse box replacements in homes and commercial premises across Hartlepool, Teesside, County Durham and the wider North East.

Common concerns include:

  • Power keeps tripping for no clear reason
  • Lights and sockets go off together
  • The fuse box looks dated or overcrowded
  • There’s no RCD protection
  • An electrician has mentioned it may need upgrading
  • An upgrade was recommended on an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR)
  • You’re planning an extension, new kitchen or bathroom renovation
  • You’re installing an EV charger or solar system
  • The property is going to be rented out

If you’re unsure whether your existing consumer unit is still suitable, we’re happy to assess it properly and give clear, practical advice.

1) Older Fuse Boxes – How Safe Are They?

Many properties we visit still have fuse boards installed as far back as the 1960s. It’s not unusual for us to come across original rewireable fuse boxes still in service. They may still protect the cables in your walls, but they offer very limited protection for you and the equipment you have plugged in.

While some older installations can continue to operate, they are unlikely to provide the safety features found in modern consumer units and may not offer the level of protection modern households require.

A useful comparison is car safety. A car built in the 1980s would not offer the same level of protection as a modern car built today, with multiple airbags, advanced crumple zones and electronic stability control. Safety technology has advanced significantly over the years. Electrical protection has progressed in much the same way. Modern consumer units are designed to detect faults faster, disconnect the supply more reliably, and significantly reduce the risk of electric shock, fire, or damage to electrical equipment.

2) What Is a Consumer Unit?

The consumer unit, often called a fuse box or fuse board, is the main control and protection point for your electrical installation.

It:

  • Distributes electricity around the property
  • Protects circuits from overload and short circuit
  • Provides protection against electric shock

Modern consumer units are built from metal rather than plastic and are designed to meet current wiring regulations, often referred to as 18th Edition compliant consumer units.

We install metal consumer units with individual Type A RCBO protection for each circuit, along with surge protection devices (SPDs) as standard. This ensures each circuit has its own dedicated fault protection.

This means:

  • A fault on one circuit won’t shut down the entire property
  • Improved protection against electric shock
  • Protection against voltage surges that can damage your equipment
  • Increased reliability

3) When Should You Consider a Consumer Unit Upgrade?

A full rewire isn’t always necessary to improve safety. In many cases, upgrading the consumer unit provides a significant improvement on its own, provided the existing wiring is in suitable condition.

Common reasons include:

  • Unexplained or repeated tripping
  • Wear, damage or signs of overheating
  • Overcrowded or poorly labelled boards
  • Rewireable or cartridge fuses still in use
  • No RCD protection
  • Multiple circuits protected by the same RCD
  • No surge protection installed
  • Recommendations from an Electrical Installation Condition Report
  • Planning an extension, new kitchen or bathroom renovation
  • Installing an EV charger, solar PV or battery storage
  • Landlord preparing a property to let
  • Insurance or risk assessment requirements

4) Our Approach to Fuse Box Replacement

A consumer unit upgrade is not just a cosmetic change.

Before carrying out a replacement, we assess:

  • The condition of existing cables and accessories
  • Earthing and bonding arrangements
  • Main tails and supply capacity
  • Signs of DIY or previous poor workmanship

We do not carry out straight board swaps without verifying that the installation is suitable.

To issue correct certification and comply with regulations, full inspection and testing must be carried out. If any remedial work is required to ensure the installation is safe and compliant, this is explained clearly and fairly.

Our standard approach includes:

  • Metal consumer unit enclosure
  • Individual Type A RCBO protection
  • Surge Protection Device (SPD) installed as standard
  • Upgrade of tails and bonding where necessary
  • Clear circuit identification and labelling
  • Full inspection and testing of all circuits
  • Issue of Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC)
  • Full Electrical Installation Condition Report confirming the installation is satisfactory
  • Building Control notification under Part P provided through NICEIC

All installations are fully inspected, tested and certified. As NICEIC Approved Contractors, our work is registered in compliance with Part P and Building Control notification is provided as standard. You can view our accreditations and company documentation for further reassurance.

The result is a safe, compliant and reliable installation.

5) What’s the Benefit of Individual RCBO Protection?

Older split-load boards can mean a single fault shuts down multiple circuits.

By installing individual RCBOs:

  • A fault on one circuit won’t affect others
  • Disruption is reduced
  • Fault finding is more straightforward

It’s a more practical setup for modern households and workplaces.

6) How Long Does a Consumer Unit Upgrade Take?

Most domestic upgrades are completed within one working day.

For commercial premises, timescales depend on the size and number of circuits.

Power will usually need to be isolated for most of the installation. We’ll discuss this in advance so you can plan accordingly.

7) Will It Stop My Electrics Tripping?

If tripping is being caused by limitations of the existing fuse box, an upgrade can improve reliability.

However, underlying circuit faults need identifying and resolving. As part of a proper consumer unit upgrade, full testing is carried out, which often highlights issues that may have gone unnoticed for years.

We specialise in fault finding, so if something isn’t right, we’ll identify it properly.

8) How Much Does a Fuse Box Replacement Cost?

Costs vary depending on:

  • Number of circuits
  • Condition of existing wiring
  • Whether tails or bonding require upgrading
  • Any remedial work identified
  • Size and complexity of commercial installations

We can’t provide one-size-fits-all prices because we need to see the installation first.

You’re welcome to send a clear photo of your existing fuse box for initial guidance before arranging a visit.

After assessment, you’ll receive a clear written quotation outlining exactly what’s included.

9) Before and After Consumer Unit Upgrades

We’ve included examples of recent consumer unit upgrades carried out in properties across the local area.

These show typical older fuse boxes we encounter, including 1960s rewireable units, and the modern metal RCBO consumer units that replace them.
